Kaplan 8 Practice Tests for the New SAT 2016

Kaplan 8 Practice Tests for the New SAT 2016Prepare for the New SAT with confidence! I think these Kaplan practices did an excellent job of capturing the feeling of this new SAT and helping a student get used to practicing the various ways of extracting information from the reading (whether in the reading test itself, or language or math) and applying it. I really like the way they gave the answers--categorizing them as "easy, medium, hard", explaining the skill needed, and often elaborating on why the answer was correct. I didn't expect to miss any at my age, but I did, and as I worked through the problems, I had a better understanding why I had missed them. Taking all 8 practice tests would definitely be helpful--not only did I improve from the first to the second but, more important, I felt more comfortable with the format after finishing the first one. Eight practices would be useful.

McGraw-Hill Education SAT 2016 Edition

McGraw-Hill Education SAT 2016 EditionThis seems like the first of the new SAT test prep guides, and it is excellent. Evidently, the authors have done a great deal of research in understanding and communicating the differences between the old and new SAT exams. Two major changes is that there are four answer choices per question (no doubt an attempt to imitate the ACT exam), more time is given per question, and the scoring reverts to the 1600 top score rubric. Additionally, the vocabulary now appears to have a rationale for being included in the test, focusing on words in context. There is a writing section that allows for 50 minutes time to complete, but includes a long passage to which the student responds rather than a general, generic statement. In this book, the selection is an excerpt from a Stephen Pinker book.

This is an outstanding book to help a student score higher in the 2016 SAT. It has 11 chapters that include a discussion about the new SAT, a diagnostic test, and two practice tests. The material to study covers a great number of topics and is very detailed. The explanations are easy to follow and help the student to understand what the reason is behind a given strategy or choice.
